Six inmates in New York have filed a lawsuit claiming the state’s lockdown during the upcoming solar eclipse infringes on their religious rights. They argue the eclipse, set for April 8, is a “religious event” crucial for their faiths.

The group, representing diverse religious backgrounds including Baptist, Muslim, Seventh-Day Adventist, Santeria practitioners, and an atheist, seeks a court order to witness the event. The lawsuit aims to become a class action, inviting other affected inmates across the state to join.

New York had announced a lockdown during the eclipse to prevent outdoor activities, citing traffic concerns and safety. However, it stated that the religious requests were under review, and protective glasses would be provided for those able to view the eclipse, which isn’t expected to happen again until 2044.
