Experiments with brain implants suggest they could provide basic visual perceptions for blind individuals, enabling them to detect objects as simple light points.

Researchers call this advancement “artificial vision,” stressing that it’s not the same as biological vision but an addition. Essentially, the implant would capture the light that reaches someone’s eye and then use electrical signals to convert it into the images that we see.

Around the world, people suffering from blindness have taken part in these trials, risking brain surgery for the implants. Elon Musk has spoken optimistically about the implants’ potential: “Even if someone has never had vision ever, like they were born blind, we believe we can still restore vision.”
