Four Canadian school boards are suing the parent companies of Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok for $3.33 billion, claiming their social media products harm student learning.

In a statement, the school boards said the apps “have rewired the way children think, behave, and learn, leaving educators and schools to manage the fallout.” They added that the companies used “exploitative business practices” and chose to “maximize profits.”

The legal action marks Canada’s first major lawsuit against social media giants, following similar moves in the U.S.

So far, Snapchat is the only company mentioned that has given a statement, saying the app was “intentionally designed to be different from traditional social media.”
