In the U.S., vinyl records have outsold CDs for the second consecutive year. In 2023, Americans purchased 43 million vinyls compared to 37 million CDs, marking a continuation of vinyl’s 17-year sales growth.

Revenue from vinyl sales significantly exceeded that from CDs, generating $1.4 billion against CDs’ $537 million. Despite an increase in CD revenue, physical CD sales actually dropped by about 700,000 units from the previous year.

The music industry’s revenue is still overwhelmingly dominated by digital streaming, which accounted for 84% or approximately $14.4 billion of the total music revenue.
