For the first time, the UN Security Council is demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

The resolution expresses deep concern “about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip,” and calls for more efforts to expand humanitarian aid and protect civilians.
‍
The resolution is the fifth to be proposed this month after four previous ones failed. Notably, the U.S. proposed a ceasefire resolution last week, but China and Russia vetoed it. The U.S. ambassador said their veto was over “cynical” and “petty” reasons.
