The U.S. federal agency DARPA has awarded a contract to a startup that will develop a Moon railway concept, as part of a decade-long lunar architecture study.
‍
Scientists emphasize that the Moon is as large as Africa, so a permanent human presence would require a substantial infrastructure to maintain it. That includes mines for water ice, nuclear power plants, factories, and railways.

Railways would also prevent human contact with the dust on the Moon which is extremely abrasive and corrosive.
‍
“This investment in key developmental research keeps our technology at the forefront of next-generation solutions,” said an executive at the startup tasked with developing the railway. “With our proven experience in the integration of complex systems and commercialized autonomous services, we will continue to create lasting change for a sustainable space ecosystem.”
