Hoboken, New Jersey, has achieved a remarkable milestone, reporting no traffic-related deaths since January 2017.

The city’s transformation followed the tragic death of an elderly pedestrian in 2015, sparking a city-wide movement to prioritize roadway safety.

The effort, named Vision Zero, included reducing speed limits, staggering traffic lights, and removing parking spaces near pedestrian crossings for visibility.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla: “I felt it wasn’t acceptable. Our seniors, who we owe the greatest duty of safety to, should be able to pass that street as safely as possible. For her to actually be killed was a trigger that we needed to take action.”

Leah Shahum, Founder and Director of the Vision Zero Network: “That goal is obviously bold. It’s also meant to help us kind of shake off the complacency that we’ve had for too long that traffic deaths are inevitable, that what we’re experiencing today is just an unfortunate and unavailable byproduct of modern society. That’s not the case.”

The Taliban has resumed public executions in Afghanistan, with one man executed for murder in front of thousands at a sports stadium.

This execution marks the fifth public death sentence carried out by the Taliban since it returned to power in August 2021, despite earlier promises of a more moderate governance approach. Floggings and stonings are also being reinstated as forms of punishment, reminiscent of the group’s rule in the late 1990s.

The UN has criticized these actions, calling for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty in Afghanistan.

A federal appeals court ruled that over 100 individuals convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot might see their sentences reduced. 

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said defendants who were implicated in obstructing the work of the U.S. Congress should not have been given longer sentences for having interfered with the “administration of justice.”

The U.S. Supreme Court will consider the felony obstruction issue next month, when it hears arguments on whether Jan. 6 rioters can be charged with obstructing an official proceeding. A decision from that court could also affect Trump, who faces related obstruction charges.

Following Hurricane Harvey’s devastation, one family from Houston relocated to Costa Rica, drawn by the promise of a healthier lifestyle. Their transition was fueled by the need for a fresh start away from the inflated housing market in Houston, leading them to embrace expat life with a home surrounded by jungle and ocean views. 

While vacationing, the mother embraced the stress-free environment, reportedly aiding in recovery from breast cancer. Now permanent residents, the family enjoys a fulfilling life, thriving on less than $30,000 a year.

The mother: “The housing market was just insane in Houston because of so many people losing their homes to the storm. Ten years ago, I would not have believed you if you told me that this is where we would be. But it feels like luck or fate led us here. We're a lot happier living here than in the U.S.” 

She continued: “Undergoing chemotherapy was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. Suddenly I had enough energy to get up in the morning and do yoga and go on hikes, I was eating more. I really felt like I was healing while we were there, in no small part because of the fresh fruit, clean air and water. Health-wise, I did a complete 180 after moving here. I healed both physically and emotionally.”

“Living here has allowed me to explore my passions so that my methods of earning income don't feel like a job, it just feels like I'm getting to do the things that I love to do, which is to be of service to others. We make less money, but we're still living pretty comfortably … our money definitely goes further here than in the U.S.”
