Researchers have engineered the world’s smallest QR code to boost security and provide a more dynamic experience. Inspired by leafhopper camouflage, it’s invisible without an infrared camera.

The QR code measures less than 2% of an inch and is based on nanostructures that make leafhoppers nearly invisible by manipulating light. This new approach paves the way for objects to be hidden in plain sight under specific light conditions.

“Our collaborators came to us with brochosomes—a ‘magic’ structure leafhoppers produce to create a cloak effect to hide from predators,” a researcher said.
