A new pill in development could offer the health benefits of exercise to those unable to engage in physical activities. It works by activating estrogen-related receptors, which are proteins crucial for replicating exercise’s effects on muscle and metabolism.

In animal studies, the pill has demonstrated the potential to enhance muscle fibers, boost endurance, and even tackle obesity and heart failure. Beyond muscle health, it has shown promise against neurodegenerative diseases, tapping into the body’s innate response to physical activity without actual movement.

Scientists see this development as a significant stride toward offering the benefits of exercise through pharmacology, especially for those hindered by age, illness, or disability.

Bahaa Elgendy, researcher: “We cannot replace exercise; exercise is important on all levels. If I can exercise, I should go ahead and get the physical activity. But there are so many cases in which a substitute is needed. If you have a compound that can activate them effectively, you could generate so many beneficial effects.”
