Ethiopia has announced it will only allow electric vehicles to enter the country, the first nation in the world to make such a move.

The EU passed a similar law last February, banning the sale of combustion engine cars in its member states, but it won’t go into effect until 2035. Ethiopia’s decision, on the other hand, is right away.

Ethiopia’s Minister for Transport and Logistics confirmed the ban. Details were scarce, but he affirmed that “a decision has been made, that automobiles cannot enter Ethiopia unless they are electric ones.”
