Vending machines at a university in Canada are being removed after a “facial recognition” error popped up on one of them. An image of the error was quickly spread online by students. 

This discovery at the University of Waterloo led to widespread student efforts to cover the camera believed to be housed within the machines. The machines are owned by MARS and decorated with M&M artwork, with Invenda being the manufacturer.

One fourth-year student said classmates have been “coming up with sticky tack, with chewing gum, with post-it notes, doing anything to cover these sensors.”

University of Waterloo spokesperson: “The university has asked that these machines be removed from campus as soon as possible. In the meantime, we’ve asked that the software be disabled.”

The service provider of the machines has deflected responsibility, stating: “Please be advised that we are a fulfillment service provider and do not own or manufacture these machines, nor have any access to this type of data from the machines.”
