70% of U.S. adults consider themselves spiritual in some way, a new Pew Research study reveals.

The study distinguishes between being spiritual and religious, noting that 22% of U.S. adults identify as “spiritual but not religious.” Nearly 50% say they are both religious and spiritual, while 21% say they are neither spiritual nor religious. 10% say they are religious but not spiritual.

The study found a broad range of interpretations of “spiritual,” including being connected with nature, being connected with other people, being connected to loved ones who've died, being open-minded, or simply continuing family traditions.

Above all, the study shows there’s a yearning among Americans for something greater than themselves, providing meaning, purpose, and comfort in their lives.
